I’m most likely moving to Germany before the end of the year. Currently I drive a 2018 Buick Regal GS and my wife drives a 2017 GMC Acadia Denali. We also have a 2000 Ford Ranger 5-speed for when we need a truck. We plan to downsize everything in life, including the number of vehicles we own to one. Our max budget will be around €600/month but I’d really like it if I could keep it under €400. We haven’t bought a used vehicle in over a decade but we aren’t 100% opposed to it.
So what car should we buy/lease in Germany?

Ferrari F8 Tributo.
Or a Golf like everyone else.

Exciting times!
You might want to try something that we don't get in the states but you also might want something a little familiar too. Maybe a Golf?

Get something you can’t get in the US, like an Avant

I’ve also considered just importing the Regal since it’s basically an Opel Insignia. But I need to get a quote on retrofitting to German standards. Work will cover the shipping cost if I go that route.

I rented a B180 in Germany and an A3 in the UK, both manuals and I really enjoyed both. I’d get something in that vein. Although, personally I’d get something like an E34 M5.

2017 Skoda Octavia Wagon?
I think this is what Svend drives.

The E34 M5 is the only correct answer here

Honestly, if the regulations are in anyway similar to the Spanish ones, I’d try to get something with the newest emission standards, possibly gasoline or hybrid. I suppose the Buick does comply at least with Euro 4 . But the Buick is a barge and you won’t fit in any city center that wasn’t bombed during WW2.
For context, in Spain most cars with Euro 4 or higher can get the regular stickers , whereas anything with the Euro 6 can get the low emissions sticker. Though PHEV’s and EV’s get the best stickers. My R190 SLK is stuck with the shitty emissions sticker though it doesn’t matter since I don’t use it in the city.
If you’re staying there indefinitely, I’d try to get the newest Golf GTE. Just for fun.

If you don’t use the truck for trucking things - VW Golf / Merc E Class / Audi A6 wagon with AWD?
You probably won’t need the Acadia and Regal with one of those.
If you do a lot of truck things, get a luxury 4 seater truck.

you clearly live in a place without state vehicular inspections that are tedious and a pain in the ass.
My car was once rejected because one fog light had water intrusion.

As it’s basically an Opel, I imagine retrofit costs would be pretty cheap. Shipping costs wouldn’t be TOO bad, I’d think?

I mean if your in Europe you should get a European only car.

Others, have no clue on pricing over there but the E-class is always a safe bet. More reliable than the 5 series and doesn’t look like an Audi A 3 -8.
C-class isn’t bad and possible to get an AMG C 43 here in the states for less than $600 a month lease

Well you’re not wrong, I live in Florida where nothing is more tedious or a pain in the ass than the people who li ve here. I just bought a car that has water intrusion in both corner lights, needs a tune up, starts and idles louder than a middle aged dad’s sneeze on repeat and all I need to do to get it registered is pay for tag, title and registration.

Heard there are some cheap manual diesel minivans in Germany. Don’t ask me how I know

A friend of mine recently imported his 2012 Charger to the Netherlands. He did the conversions, which were not a big deal, but getting the car licensed and paying the correct tax (lower if you ship it with household goods there) was a paperwork mountain, apparently, and required a lot of visits to various official offices .
I kept telling him to just get a lightly used E63 wagon when he arrived. That’s my advice to you.

I’d go Golf R wagon, but that’s just me.
![]() 08/26/2020 at 12:43 |

I say get a used E63 wagon.
Roomy, cargo space, and much speed. The above is a 2016 at a reasonable price. You might need to find one offered by a dealer for payment financing, but you should buy this for Opposite lock’s sake.

I think the euros get a diesel Audi S4; is that in the price range? That could be a lot of fun.

Nope. Svend’s a Superb man.

Yep Id say A rteon looks way better in wagon form than sedan

As I mentioned, work’s covering the shipping. So as long as the retrofit costs aren’t bad I may just go that route. Although I’d like to have a wagon for the space since we’re giving up an SUV.

You could get a Lancia Voyager. The availability is much better than with the mk2 vans. I think these minivans are almost always diesel as well, but only with automatic transmissions. Random example: https://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=305993167

I live in Germany. As long as the car has a gasoline engine, there are no limitations. Well, theoretically, if it has no catalyst converter and is not over 30 years old (emission zones have historical plates exceptions), then you could have a problem. Good luck finding one of those in 2020 though .
